Dredging of Swansea Channel
Stage 4 Dredging of Swansea Channel
Dredging is an important waterway management activity that assists in keeping navigation channels clear so boaters can access maritime facilities and infrastructure that may be blocked by sand build-up.
Where
Mariners are advised dredging operations are underway with dredge equipment located at the “Dog-leg” turn within Swansea Channel.

Restrictions
Mariners should be aware of possible restricted manoeuvring of support craft and pipeline anchors in the vicinity. All vessels are requested to navigate with caution, reduce wash, maintain a proper lookout and keep well clear of dredging operations and equipment.
Changes to navigation
For safety reasons, please stay away from the dredging work area shown on the map during this operation. The dredging vessel is using underwater and floating pipes to move sand to Elizabeth Island. Since the vessel moves daily, the pipes also shift daily. These pipes may not always be visible, so all vessel operators in the area are urged to be extra cautious.
If possible, please use the alternative Airforce Channel until this stage of dredging is complete.
When
Until further notice.
Stage 4 of Swansea Channel maintenance dredging work commenced in late April 2026, focusing on The Dog Leg section of the channel. This should take about two months, depending on weather and it will remove about 10,000 cubic metres of sand.
