The official 2026/27 NSW boating season has launched

Coinciding with the October long weekend, maritime authorities including NSW Maritime and Marine Rescue NSW have kicked off safety campaigns like Operation Prepare to Launch. Because engine failures, battery issues, and running out of fuel account for nearly 60% of all emergency water responses in the state, authorities are heavily pushing for skippers to dust off their gear and run thorough maintenance checks.

To help get your vessel out of winter hibernation, watch this quick safety checklist guide from NSW Maritime detailing the essential checks required before hitting the water:

If your boat has been sitting idle over the cooler months, ensure you complete these steps before heading to the boat ramp:

  • Fuel & Lines: Flush out any stale fuel and fill up with fresh fuel.
  • Battery: Test and fully charge the marine battery.
  • Safety Equipment: Check expiry dates on your flares and fire extinguishers. Ensure you have functional lifejackets for everyone on board and that inflatable models have been serviced.
  • The Bungs: Double-check that your boat bungs are in place before reversing into the water.
  • Log On: Use the free Marine Rescue NSW App or VHF Channel 16 to “Log On” before departure so someone knows your destination and expected return time.
